When you hammer a nail into a board and accidentally strike your finger, you take care of the injury immediately. The right hand never says to the left hand, "I am doing charitable work for you." It just does whatever it can to help -- giving first aid, compassion and concern. In the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, the practice of dana, generosity, is like this. We do whatever we can to benefit others without seeing ourselves as helpers and the others as the helped. This is the spirit of non-self.

I shall never forget the light that flooded my eyes when you guys removed my blindfold, the colors of the paper ribbons and balloons, the HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner in kiddy letters, the hula skirts, the tiara tied together by string, and most of all,

YOUR voices, laughter, hugs, silly poses and HEARTS.

With a little

bombay dancing

energy and recklessness in the style of "Saturday Night Fever"

and love

life is, undoubtedly, beautiful.

Thank you for willingly subjecting your skin to pain, redness and freckles because you know I love the sun.
Thank you for making the start of my 19th year stupefyingly stupendous.

love, joyce.

2005, best year of my life.

"It was suddenly so clear, that the incredible wonder of this moment, here, now, can't be improved upon. The idea that it can be improved is the height of arrogance, the root of all suffering. It was suddenly not about changing anything whatsoever, it was seeing, feeling, being the incredible wonder of life as it explodes silently through everything." - The Buddhism Community

Happy Birthday Amanda!!!!
I totally suck at writing sentimental messages, but I want to say, you are brilliant! A great friend, producer of impeccable color-coordinated notes, expert handler of dissection scissors, crazy party planner, happy "sor por" (used with fondness :D) who isn't afraid to laugh at anything...and the list goes on! Even though I threaten to poke out your eyes on a daily basis, I just can't help but admire your superduperness.

love,
joyce.

First entry after registering here almost two years ago, talk about procrastination eh? I don't remember the details but on 1/11/2004, I was probably studying from the torturous AP US History textbook American Pageant (STAY AWAY FROM IT), and was therefore delusional and handicapped when I stumbled upon this site and hit the "sign up" button.

Although the words "the British ruled the waves and waived the rules" have established a permanent foothold in my brain (much to my dismay), I am glad to say that I have moved on. Am now studying medicine at HKU, i.e. preparing for a bright future of sleep deprivation and therefore bad breath rivaling that of S. Baldrick. Muahaha.

HKU Med is a lot more fun than I expected. We get to attend lectures at 8:30am every morning (trust me, it's awesome!), wear white lab coats (no more butcher aprons!), study bacteria and viruses and necrotic livers in a freezing room close to the morgue (eerie!) and use clean toilets (freakay!) etc. etc. Of course, it is the awesome people I've met here that makes all the difference. Slides of mounted muscular tissue, even when accompanied by the most detailed explanation, are no match. I lub you guys.

I'm getting sleepy so I'll just cut the crap and go straight to the High Table pictures. I apologize in advance for my ugwinesssss. (click pictures for bigger versions)
